Keep Louth Special petition attracts 4,030 signatures so far

Keep Louth Special is delighted to announce that its petition to stop a supermarket being built on the site of the Louth cattle market has so far attracted 4,030 signatures. “This is a tremendous result,” said Sue Locking of KLS. “Most people have recognised that building a  supermarket on that site would suck the retail life out of the town. It is too far away from existing shops, and uphill, making it unlikely that those who used a supermarket there would also visit town shops.”

This doesn’t mean that the town will be deprived of  extra food retailers. The national takeover of Somerfield by the Co-operative Group will mean a new supermarket chain will take over the existing Somerfield site in the next few months. “The Somerfield site is much better integrated into the town,” said Nick Louth of KLS. In addition it is quite possible that a smaller food retailer may takeover the vacant Woolworths site on Mercer Row.

Keep Louth Special is currently working with other town groups on plans which would keep the livestock market on its current site, but add in a wider range of agricultural sales and uses on other days which would improve its profitability.

“East Lindsey has been far too hasty in declaring the existing livestock market uneconomic,” said Nick Louth. “The ADAS report commissioned by ELDC showed clearly how important the livestock market is to the agricultural community, and how just a little imagination could  re-invigorate it with enormous benefits to the town.

The petition will continue until Valentine’s Day, February 14th. Keep Louth Special would like to thank the dozens of retailers who are hosting petitions, and have contributed funds to the benefit gig. John Shuttleworth, the comic alter ego of Louth resident Graham Fellows, is headlining the concert, which takes place at Louth Town Hall on Sunday February 8th at 7.30pm. The Keep Louth Special SPECIAL will include video appearances from actor Jim Broadbent and singer Barbara Dickson, as well as local acts. Tickets are available from Off The Beaten Tracks in Aswell Street and at Perkins Pantry in Mercer Row.
